Bazaars of NJMU
便宜的价格,高尚的品质
Azher Khan, 曹启环
October 18, witnessed a bazaar on NJMU’s Jiangning campus, i.e. the 7th NJMU Students’ Flea Market. On the cool autumn morning, one could see rows of stalls lining the ShuRen Square which were open for business for the whole day. An intensely lively and bustling scene, the market showcased everything from past issues of magazines to cosmetics, from books and clothes to even jewelry and all that was typical to the average college dorm room. Participation was open to all, students, teachers, custodians and all of the staff alike. The School of International Studies even participated this time around for the first time.
This flea market was, however, intended for more than plain face value. Chen LiDi, President of the Living Affairs Department of the Students’ Union said ”We aspire to cater to the entire population through such activities, which not only strengthen economic awareness of the students, but also advance essential inter-student interactions.” When asked what the market accomplished for, MengNi, a designated salesperson commented “This event managed to hold threefold meaning for all involved; the owners, the salespeople, the consumers. The owners managed to make the most of all those things they didn’t need, the salespeople got to practice salesmanship, and the consumers just saved a lot of money.”
Be it festive value or just a solid show of thriftiness, it is events like these that manage to make themselves part of local traditions, and we’ll definitely keep an eye out for more of these in the future.
Are you willing to Farewell to Barbecue?
你愿意告别烧烤吗?
【Recently, an advocate of farewell to barbecue draws our attention. It’s confirmed that barbeque can cause startled air pollution and do tremendous harms to our health. However, some people are tempted by its fantastic scent and taste despite the severe effects. What’s your choice? Are you willing to say goodbye to it?】
Well, personally, I’m reluctant to give it up. It's so popular in America. At weekends, we go outside to have a barbecue together. There, sausages, hamburgers, steak, large shrimps etc. are put over the charcoal. I enjoy the feeling of eating outside with friends, because I don't have to care too much about my eating behavior, and it brings me closer to nature.
Mr. Prudek
It's high time we said goodbye to barbecue. Roasting food will decompose almost all the nutrients and at the same time produce carcinogen, hydrocarbons and tiny soot, which aggravate heart and lung disease and simultaneously pollute our environment. Meanwhile, our vulnerable earth can no longer suffer so much poisonous smoke. Therefore, in order to save your lives as well as others’, keep away from it.

Despite all its bad effects, I'm still quite fond of roasted food. It's so palatable and creates a good opportunity of enhancing our friendship and making acquaintance with new people. We can also experience the pleasure of DIY and sense achievement.

I fancy it so much and I believe that when a new food industry arises, it provides lots of job chances. If we abandon it, enormous people will lose their jobs, what we have to do now is to improve it into a more environment-friendly and healthier product rather than make it disappear.

After our interview, we can see it’s a controversial problem; people are tending to enjoy the present life without concerning about the future. But over the long haul, it will deprive us of enjoying many other things. So we sincerely hope that everyone takes this issue seriously.
